Thermophysical Properties and Elemental Composition of Black Locust, Poplar and Willow Biomass

Biomass is currently the main renewable energy source (RES) in EU, particularly Poland. Solid biomass for purposes primarily sourced from forests, wood processing industry, and agriculture. A significant of this feedstock could also be short-rotation woody crops (SRWCs), including black locust, poplar, willow. Since numerous factors determine SRWC quality, current study aimed at assessing thermophysical properties elemental composition depending on plant species, soil enrichment procedure, harvest rotation over a consecutive 12-year period cultivation. The characteristics under study, moisture content, ash volatile matter, fixed carbon, higher heating value (HHV), hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur, chlorine contents, were significantly differentiated by all factors, i.e., rotation, interactions between these factors. species accounted highest percentage variation HHV, nitrogen while made largest contribution to contents. locust was characterized lowest content (an average 38.89%) sulfur 0.033% DM), 0.91% 0.032% DM).
